Today in history, on February 12, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was born in 1809. In 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that abolished slavery. His eloquence is remembered till this day; in his Gettysburg Address, he rededicated to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence, that everyone is created equal and free. We remember President Abraham Lincoln as a true gentleman who was devoted to his country, and to the equality and freedom of all people. Not only that, he was a vegetarian who once said: “I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being.”

Our Association members were in Piazza San Marco, the famous square in Venice, Italy, for the annual Venice Carnival. At this event, people from Europe and all over the world gathered for the wonderful Venetian Carnevale di Venezia, which dates back to 1268. The carnival is a 10-day parade of beautifully handmade costumes and amazing masks worn throughout Venice’s streets and squares by dedicated costume makers. During the carnival, Supreme Master Television was also introduced to attendees on the event organizer’s enormous television screen. With its quaint streets, ancient bridges, and charming canals, this city is truly unique, and so is its Carnival.

In world news, the Netherlands increases its donation to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The Netherlands has added over €3 million to its pledge, so that now its total annual contribution to UNRWA is €15 million.
The Netherlands is very supportive of the peace building between Israel and Palestine, and is an important contributor to UNRWA.

In ecology news, Sharp Corporation works towards a greener future. The Japanese electronics maker is attempting to reduce the effects of global warming as a central part of its business practice. Sharp President, Mr. Mikio Katayama, wants to concentrate on developing environmentally friendly TV displays, as well as products that use solar energy. Mr. Katayama stated: “We plan to contribute to preventing global warming through clean energy.” Sharp is currently developing a LCD flat screen TV that uses 50% less energy than conventional TVs.

In humanitarian news, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a non-governmental organization based in the USA, has donated US$400 million to help increase maize production in Africa. It will support research on improved maize varieties and the training of African farmers in a type of maize that can tolerate droughts. Professor Ado Garki, Director of the Institute of Agricultural Research in Africa, says that “drought-tolerant maize is capable of meeting Africa’s food requirement.”

In cultural news, German theater group helps children make sound life choices. The People’s Theater of Offenbach, Germany stages instructive mini-dramas with young, amateur actors. They enact challenging social situations common to all children’s lives. At crucial points in the action, the play stops, and audience members discuss appropriate responses to the circumstance portrayed. When a promising course of action is agreed upon, the players act out the audience’s suggestions. In this way, the players learn to understand and empathize with each other’s life situations.

In animal welfare news, a nurse named Sheila Brown from Furlow, Arkansas, USA provides a loving home to over 100 animals. Her companions include goats, horses, cats, chickens, dogs, geese, pigs, guinea fowl, emu, deer, and a skunk. What makes her farm special is the care that she offers to animals with special needs such as a 3-legged goat and a blind goat. Nurse Brown has also helped find homes for 580 dogs misplaced by Hurricane Katrina.
