Today, February 11, is the Hindu festival of Saraswati Puja, also known as Vasant Panchami. This special day is in honor of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music and the arts. Saraswati is the consort of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Goddess Saraswati is worshipped for the attainment of the highest knowledge, that of spiritual enlightenment. Saraswati Puja is thought to be an auspicious day for children to get their first lessons of reading and writing. Schools hold special events, and many people go to temples to worship the goddess on this day. Saraswati Puja is also representative of the coming of spring. Yellow is considered to be a very important color on this day, symbolizing the soon to emerge spring crops. Young and old both join in the merriment of flying kites. May this Saraswati Puja be a joyous one, with God blessing all with the highest knowledge of spiritual enlightenment.
