Through her great patience and love, Supreme Master Ching Hai earned the trust of animals rarely encountered by most of us. She described her unique experience of coming in close contact with these noble wilds.

Supreme Master Ching Hai:
I was really, really touched and feel very honored. I don’t remember ever feeling so happy! Being around the wilds expands our hearts and leads us to a beautiful meadow of life that was totally untouched by prejudice and blame. We will just be there, in the now, merging with nature, unspoiled and uncomplicated, ever so grateful of the knowledge of the unknown, delighted in the indulgence of Mother Nature’s love.

Welcome back to Noteworthy News - Alleviating News for a Deserving World.

And now for our series of Shining World Leadership segment featuring Mr. Sanjit Bunker Roy, founder of the Barefoot College, which has trained people from many countries to be solar engineers.

For decades, Supreme Master Ching Hai has exemplified unconditional love through her worldwide humanitarian work. She has inspired our Association members and countless people across the globe, to follow in her compassionate example. Through enlightened leadership a better world is truly possible. In recent times, a new and exciting phenomenon is on the rise that is bringing much hope and light to our planet Earth. More and more leaders and governments around the world are adopting practices that greatly improve and enhance the lives of their citizens, human and animal alike.

Sanjit Bunker Roy was born in present-day West Bengal, India in 1945. While he was a university student, he had a life-changing experience when he volunteered to help villagers whose crops had failed. He then realized how privileged his life was, and felt that his life’s mission lay in helping the disadvantaged villagers. Mr. Roy moved to the village of Tilonia in the state of Rajasthan. In 1972 he established the Social Work and Research Centre, which is better known as the Barefoot College.

The Barefoot College has worked to better the lives of rural village communities in such areas as water, electricity, housing, health, sanitation, and education. Protecting and conserving the rural environment is of key importance.
The College is completely solar-powered and encompasses over 80,000 square feet (approximately 7,400 square meters). There is a 700,000 liter rainwater harvesting tank to provide for all water needs.
Due mostly to Mr. Roy’s endeavors spanning over 35 years, at least 100,000 people in 110 villages now have clean drinking water, and opportunities for education, health services, and employment. Youths living in villages have become solar engineers, and can install and operate solar electricity systems. In addition, hand pumps and tanks for drinking water have been integrated into the villages.

Women and men have come to the Barefoot College from countries such as Bhutan, Cameroon, Mali, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. Trained as solar engineers, they then go back to their own countries to install and maintain solar energy projects. This has enabled their villages to have electricity, some for the first time.
Now there are 20 Barefoot Colleges in 13 of Indian’s 26 states. All this has been accomplished through using the traditional knowledge of the rural people.
Barefoot College has received many awards for its significant contribution to sustainable living. Some of these prizes include: in 2003, Britain’s St. Andrew’s Prize and the Ashden Award for sustainable energy; the 2004 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement; the 2005 Skoll Award for social entrepreneurship; and the 2006 Alcan Prize for Sustainability with a US$1 million award. The Prince of Wales also visited to learn about all the wonderful and sustainable developments at the College.

Thank you, Mr. Sanjit Bunker Roy, for all you have done and are doing to help the rural population of India and other countries develop a sustainable lifestyle. May Heaven bless your vision and accomplishments in helping others to live in harmony with Mother Earth.

Let’s enjoy a joke, “Good Qualities,” told by Supreme Master Ching Hai.

The girl said, “The man I marry must stand out in company, must be musical, must tell jokes, like dancing, and stay at home every night.” So the mother said, “You don’t want a husband, you want a television set.”

And now for our viewer’s heartline…

This message was sent by Muhammad from Saudi Arabia who included some lovely pictures:

The bird and the dog in these pictures are playing together in peace. The animals are protecting our planet; we should protect the animals for the benefit of our planet.

A team of 20 scientists from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom have created a detailed global map that shows the heavy toll that human activities are having on the oceans. The scientists divided the ocean into one kilometer square sections and examined all data available on how the marine environment is affected by 17 human activities including acidification caused by climate change, fishing, oil rigs, commercial shipping, and human-related pollution. Lead scientist, Dr. Benjamin Halpern of the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis in Santa Barbara, California stated, “Our results show that when these … are summed up, the big picture looks much worse than I imagine most people expected. It was certainly a surprise to me.” The authors of the study say the results should be a "wake-up call" to policymakers.

A respectful salute and blessings to Dr. Halpern and all scientists involved in this collaboration for turning our attention to the health of the oceans. May our studies of the seas show us how to protect them with kindness and loving care.

23. TIME TO ACT…Plankton helps to reduce CO2. From the Alfred Wegener Institute’s expedition to the Antarctic, scientists were able to discover that large amounts of surface plankton algae in the Southern Ocean can significantly reduce the CO2 in the ocean, which can in turn have a beneficial effect on a global scale. The vessel Polarstern’s ongoing research explores how the Southern Ocean may help regarding current and future climate.

We laud your important findings, scientists! May God bless your pursuits for a greater understanding of our life-sustaining planet.

24. TIME TO ACT…The McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) submits energy efficiency report to the UN. On Thursday, MGI released a study at a United Nations Investor Summit on Climate Risk calling for improvements in energy efficiency to lower CO2 levels. The report, titled “The Case for Investing in Energy Productivity,” outlined how investments in energy productivity from various sectors can both help the environment and increase long-term profits.

Thank you, United Nations and the McKinsey Global Institute, for your commendable efforts to bring about positive changes in the environment. May countries, business, and ordinary people around the world invest in energy saving green technologies for the benefit of all.

25. TIME TO ACT… Global warming may bring new predators to Antarctica. At the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, biologists said that sharks, crabs, and other predators may be detrimental to the unique and diverse marine life of the warming Antarctic waters. Dr. Sven Thatje of the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, Britain, said that with the advance of predators from the north there “would be a tragic loss for biodiversity in one of the last wild places on Earth.” He strongly encouraged the international community to minimize the greenhouses gases causing climate change and endangering the one-of-a-kind marine inhabitants.

Our sincere thankfulness, scientists, for your informative research and dedication to the preservation of all life. May the Antarctic marine beings flourish in safety and abundance thus continuing to color our planet with their magnificent beauty.

26. TIME TO ACT…Increase in sea temperature linked to greater number of hurricanes. Studies carried out at the Hazard Research Centre at the University College of London show that an increase in ocean surface temperature of only ½ a degree Celsius is linked to a 40% increase in hurricane activity in the Atlantic. Tropical storms are the biggest cause of severe losses and are therefore monitored closely by the insurance industry. Trevor Maynard, Manager of Emerging Risks at the insurance company, Lloyd's, stated, “This study is the latest in a long chain of research that quantifies the impact of sea temperatures on hurricane frequency.”

Hazard Research Centre, we are highly appreciative of your very important study signaling the dangers of climate change. We pray all people can take immediate steps to work towards restoring our perfect planet to her harmonious equilibrium.

27. TIME TO ACT… Twenty cities across the globe will switch off all non-essential electric supplies for one hour on March 29, as part of the World Wildlife Fund's project to inspire energy saving.

28. TIME TO ACT… The Environment Minister of Canada’s Saskatchewan province is visiting Australia to discuss issues on climate change and promote the province’s technology.

29. TIME TO ACT… The Cuban Ambassador to the United Nations noted the country’s environmental measures being implemented to address climate change.

30. TIME TO ACT… Scientists at the University of California in Los Angeles have developed a material for smokestacks and tailpipes that can absorb exhaust-based carbon dioxide.

31. TIME TO ACT… To improve air quality and enhance a green 2008 Olympics, Beijing, China is placing stringent emission standards on new vehicles as well as gasoline and diesel fuels.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake that shook Mexico on February 12 caused temporary power outages and panic among local people, but so far there has been no reported loss of life, injuries or damage of any kind. Those who had remained outside of their homes in fear of possible aftershocks have returned home.

Thank you Master for your loving concern for Mexico.
