1. FN…Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief work in Bolivia. Following weeks of heavy rain across the nation, more than 60,000 families throughout Bolivia have been left struggling to cope with the worst floods in decades. Deeply concerned for the flood victims, Supreme Master Ching Hai immediately donated US$10,000, which would be equivalent to US$145,000 of purchased goods in the US based on the cost of living in Bolivia. Supreme Master Ching Hai also sent a relief team of our Association members to the most severely affected regions. Supreme Master Television’s correspondent reports from Beni, Bolivia.

Supreme Master Television: Bolivia (f):
Halo friends, I’m Silvia Taylor reporting for Supreme Master Television.
We are now in the city of Trinidad, district of Beni, Bolivia, where members of the disaster relief team of Supreme Master Ching Hai have been sent along with a US$10,000 donation to help the victims of the floods of the Niña phenomenon.

We are here now in the warehouse of the Infantry Battalion of the Navy, where we have been allowed to prepare the foods that will be distributed to the affected families. At this moment we are here with Captain Rodolfo Escalante.

Captain Rodolfo Escalante:
Thank you very much Sylvia for the interview, especially a special thanks to Supreme Master Ching Hai, and well, I can tell you that the city of Trinidad is being affected by this natural phenomenon, the Niña phenomenon. We have lots of affected families. It’s a flood which we were not expecting. For the last 40 years, Trinidad has not had this kind of natural disaster.

The eastern Beni region is one of the most heavily flooded areas. With Supreme Master Ching Hai’s donation, urgently needed items for the displaced were purchased. These included rice, beans, flour, salt, oil, and infant formula for the many families with children.

Supreme Master Television: Bolivia (f):
How has your experience been working with the disaster relief team of the Supreme Master Ching Hai?

Captain Rodolfo Escalante:
Well she had previously worked in this activity, providing the collaboration for the victims, and, now I’m surprised to work with you in a very coordinated way. I can see there is goodwill, we are happy to be able to work with you. I congratulate again the Supreme Master. Congratulations for this humane group which dedicates a lot of time in their lives to be separated from their families, in order to come to far lands.

Supreme Master Television: Bolivia (f):
Would you like to send any message for Supreme Master Ching Hai?

Captain Rodolfo Escalante:
The only message is the thankfulness in name of all the people of Trinidad, and in the name of all the Bolivian people and, well, to tell her that there’s always a Supreme Being who watches everything that happens on earth and I ask Him to give Supreme Master His blessings, and to keep it up, according to her means, collaborating with the affected people who will be surely very grateful.

We sincerely thank Supreme Master Ching Hai and our Association’s relief teams for your love and care to the flood victims in Bolivia. We pray for the speedy provision of safety, shelter and comfort so these families may quickly return to their normal lives.

Supreme Master Ching Hai:
Even the fish in the river, or the fish in the lakes or the wild ducks; they bring blessings to your house, to your life. They bring some inspiration invisibly to your knowing, but their presence will evoke in you something more than just a mundane occupation about food and clothes. And you will just get inspiration about something, or an answer to some question which you did not know before. And I hope that you guys will enjoy it, and I have asked their permission also and they were very happy that I am writing it.

We are grateful for all Supreme Master Ching Hai’s moving books about our animal friends whose very nature represents nearness to Heaven. We sincerely wish the greatest success of “The Noble Wilds” in further awakening our sensitivity to the divine inner world we share with our co-habitants.

2008FEB15 - Noteworthy News - Time To Act

15. TIME TO ACT…Climate change can also mean cold weather. Even though climate change is often associated with the phenomenon known as global warming, this process can also bring colder weather. At the Combat Global Warming conference in India, former Union Minister for Power and Environment Suresh Prabhu said that the cold wave that had swept through India recently could be attributed to global warming. Currently, northern Âu Lạc (Vietnam) is experiencing the longest cold spell on record, with below-freezing temperatures, according to a national weather center. Hong Kong is also in the midst of a 40 year record cold period.

Our sincere thanks Mr. Prabhu and other scientists for your comprehensive observations of climate change effects across the globe. May these unusual weather patterns awaken us all to the need for unified efforts to return our Earth to harmony and stability.

Supreme Master Ching Hai had explained about this phenomenon during the teleconference on climate change with Supreme Master Television staff on January 20, 2008:

Supreme Master Ching Hai: You see, the climate change doesn’t mean only hot. It means the change of climate around the world. And a lot of frequent disasters. You know, a hot place becomes cold and a cold place becomes hot and then it becomes all kind of chaotic later on. And it’s a very, very great suffering for the people. And many countries, many cities will be under the water! Yeah and more storm, more typhoon. And a lot before it really ends. It doesn’t just end like ok, now it’s going to end and finito, it’s not like that.

Questioner (f): Exactly.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Yes it will be agonizing for a while, you understand me? And a lot of people will suffer and they would not even understand why.

16. TIME TO ACT…British Health Protection Agency says up to 10,000 people in the UK may perish from global warming by 2012. A report entitled “Heath Effects of Global Warming” estimates that if no change is made to reverse current trends, unseasonably hot summers could cause numerous deaths. One of the biggest concerns is the potential for a heat wave in the southwest of England. To address the threats, the government is requiring national medical institutions to draw up action plans to address the likely health challenges.

Kudos United Kingdom for recognizing the immediate danger of global warming and taking actions to save lives! May God grace our planet with protection and further policies to reverse the effects of climate change.

17. TIME TO ACT…United Nations urges immediate action on climate change. The UN General Assembly is calling on member states to quickly follow up on December’s Bali meeting at which nearly 190 nations agreed to adopt a plan to cut emissions. Srgjan Kerim, President of 62nd United Nation’s General Assembly, stated, “We need both targets and immediate practical actions that can help the most vulnerable adapt to climate change.”

We deeply appreciate your call to action, Mr. Kerim and United Nations General Assembly. May member nations respond immediately with lifesaving actions.

18. TIME TO ACT… Silicon producer builds energy recycling system. West Virginia Alloys is a subsidiary of the Globe Metallurgical Corporation, the country’s largest silicon producer. It has signed an agreement with Recycled Energy Development to build an energy recycling system at its plant. Norway’s government has announced plans to decrease emissions to 9% below 1990 levels by 2012 and to be carbon-neutral by 2030.

Bravo, Norway! Your strategic plans to meet your emissions reduction goals and sustain the environment are truly laudable. God bless your country and her people for being responsible, Earth loving citizens.

21. TIME TO ACT… Las Vegas water supply disappearing. A study by researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California, USA predicts that Lake Mead, the prime water source for the city of Las Vegas, is likely to go dry within 13 years. The lake, which is currently half full, serves 90% of the city’s water needs. Saying that the effect will be more far-reaching than Las Vegas only, Dr. Tim Barnett, the study’s co-author, stated, “This water problem is not a scientific abstraction, but rather one that will impact each and every one of us that live in the Southwest.”

We appreciate it, Dr. Barnett and Scripps Institution researchers, for revealing this urgent truth to the public. May the Providence guide us in finding solutions to preserve our resources so that future generations can live in happiness, security, and prosperity.

22. TIME TO ACT… Shipping emissions to be addressed. According to a draft United Nations study revealed Wednesday, merchant ships are responsible for up to three times as much carbon emissions as estimated previously, or 4.5 percent of total global carbon emissions. Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the United Nations Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, urged that more attention be given to this industry in climate change discussions.

Thank you for bringing attention to this important matter, Dr. Pachauri and United Nations. We hope to hear good news on cleaner greener shipping practices soon.

28. TIME TO ACT… Thai environmentalists chosen as torch bearers for the Olympics. Six environmental advocates from Thailand have been selected to bear the torch for this year’s Olympics. In keeping with the theme of a “Green Olympics,” they have been committed to conservation efforts in Thailand.

Congrats Thai green activists on the honor of this year’s Olympic torchbearers. We wish you and all participants the best for a successful Olympic run!

29. TIME TO ACT…Kite- powered freighter completes journey. The German freighter, the MS Beluga SkySails, glided into port in Venezuela after successfully crossing the Atlantic, partially powered by a giant, computer-controlled kite. The kite created by SkySails saved 15 to 20 percent in fuel costs and, very importantly, cut down on CO2 emissions.

Sweet sailing, MS Beluga! Hats off for successfully using clean wind power for your first transatlantic voyage. We wish you and all ships in the world many more such “green” sails on the open seas.

30. TIME TO ACT… UN calls for clear global plan to mitigate climate change. The United Nations General Assembly president Srgjan Kerim said it is urgent and critical to have a collective plan of action in place for all nations, to successfully lessen the effect of climate change. He stated, “We can’t wait for tomorrow. We need to act today.”

Thank you, President Srgjan Kerim, for urging all nations to come together for
these comprehensive goals to save our precious planet! May we all heed your call for united action now.

31. TIME TO ACT…Earth warming is much faster than previously believed. Australian scientists in the atmospheric research unit of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization report that the world is warming more quickly than predicted by the United Nation’s climate change agency. They also say that the atmospheric level of harmful emissions is even higher than current worst-case scenario estimates.

Our deep appreciation Australian researchers for sharing the news about the gravity of climate change. We pray for the wisdom to take immediate and effective actions in preserving the beautiful jewel of our Earth.

At the Christmas retreat in December 2007, Supreme Master Ching Hai had explained the logical reasoning for the unexpected rapid pace of global warming to our Association members:

SUPREME MASTER CHING HAI: Because the climate is warming quicker than they predict, that’s the problem. If the ocean is warm, then it melts the ice. Because when the ice is there it reflects the heat, and so the ocean is less warm, but now the ocean is warm enough to melt the ice, and so there is nothing to reflect the heat, and therefore the ocean is warmer. So that’s why they could not calculate it well. And so it keeps warming faster than they think. So in that case if the governments or everyone don’t do anything, then that’s it.

32. TIME TO ACT... Hewlett-Packard Australia offers a carbon offset program to customers who buy LaserJet printers.

33. TIME TO ACT… In a recent meeting in the United States, the governor of California and the president of Mexico agreed to join efforts in addressing climate change.

In environmental news, American company General Motors (GM) has partnered with Coskata Incorporated of Illinois, USA for an eco-friendly project. They will develop ethanol-based biofuels from typical waste products, such as secondhand tires and plant matter. The new method of biofuel production is far more efficient than traditional methods, as it uses less water and the resulting product will only cost US$1 per gallon. In addition, it does not use crops which could otherwise be used for food. GM plans to have their first commercial plant operating by 2011, which will produce up to 100 million gallons of ethanol per year.

Thank you General Motors and Coskata! Heaven bless your endeavors to help sustain our beloved planet.

Supreme Master TV Staff:
"Would you please tell us more about the purpose of the animal co-inhabitants of our planet? Thank you! "

Supreme Master Ching Hai:
"As you can well see, some of them are there to help people with their physical need in areas that good strength is required. Some of them are also there not just for physical help but to ward off bad influences in general, to protect their human companions or their caretaker or their animal companions, by their presence alone because they do have divine invisible power because they are connected with the divine. Some of the animals are there to convey messages of good news that will be coming to you, or warning of misfortunes ahead. Well, that’s if we can listen.

Many people are too busy to hear what the animal friends are telling them, otherwise some, they just quietly bless their caretakers with good luck, good health, with fortune, with happiness, even spiritual upliftment, etc. There’s no end to what an animal can and will do for the near and loved humans or their companions."

And speaking of our animal friends, Supreme Master Ching Hai’s much-anticipated “The Noble Wilds,” with photographs taken personally by the author, makes its exciting debut this weekend at the 2008 Taipei International Book Fair.

A special videoconference marking the book release of “The Noble Wilds” will be held with dignitaries joining in from near and afar, including the much respected second president of Slovenia Dr. Janez Drnovšek, as well as the most honored guest, Supreme Master Ching Hai.

We sincerely thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for your remarkable books which help us to better understand the sentience of animals, and thereby rediscover our own great love for life.

Welcome back to Noteworthy News - Good News for a Safer World.

In technology news, German scientists have designed small water treatment plants that operate on solar power. Dr. Joachim Koschikowski and his team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) have developed the units for places in Africa and Asia that aren’t on the electrical grid. Dr. Koschikowski explained: “In our plant, the salty water is heated up and guided along a micro-porous, water-repellent membrane. Cold drinking water flows along the other side of the membrane.” One cubic meter of drinking water, the equivalent of 1,000 liters, will cost about 10 euros.

A big thank you and Heaven’s blessings to Dr. Koschikowski and the scientists of Fraunhofer Institute for inventing this green water treatment method. May all people be endowed with happy and healthy lives.

In news of sharing, a couple from Michigan, USA leaves US$1.6 million to friends and neighbors. Mr. Willis Hatch and his wife Arlene passed on when they were in their 90s. We thank Mr. and Mrs. Hatch for you noble example of generosity. May your souls rest in the eternal divine love.

Let’s enjoy some light-hearted humor with a joke told by Supreme Master Ching Hai. The title of this joke is “Operation In Need.”

“Doctor, I need an operation,” said an old lady to a doctor. “What's wrong?” The doctor asked. “Nothing. I just need an operation.” “You are not sick but you want an operation? Where should I perform it?” “It doesn't matter. Just go ahead and do it.” “But why?” “I am a member of the Senior Citizens Association. All our members have had surgery. And they talk about it every day. I have never had surgery and cannot join in the conversation!”

And now for our viewer’s heartline…

How can I see the Supreme Master in person? I would love to attend an event where she is speaking. I feel such a sense of peace when I see her through the website.

2008FEB14 - Noteworthy News - Time To Act

15. TIME TO ACT…Land for biofuel crops damages the environment. A joint report from the Natural Conservancy and the University of Minnesota in the US concludes that converting forest, peat and grass land to produce biofuel causes a carbon debt which may take hundreds of years to repay. They estimate that the conversion of rainforest land into oil crops produces carbon debts ranging from 17 to over 400 years.

We are highly appreciative of your report, scientists, in helping us understand the need to carefully research fossil fuel alternatives. May the Providence guide us to find energy sources that are truly good for the planet and all her inhabitants.

16. TIME TO ACT… Recyclable cardboard to replace wire hangers at the dry cleaners. United States company Hanger Network has created clothing hangers from 100% recycled cardboard to replace the wire hangers currently used at dry cleaners. Printed with creative and fun advertisements, these Ecohangers are paid for by sponsors instead of the dry cleaners having to purchase them. The company’s goal is to replace the 3.5 billion wire hangers that are currently thrown away in US landfills each year.

You have our deep admiration, Hanger Network! Heaven surely smiles on such an innovative way to go green. We look forward to seeing Ecohangers everywhere soon!

17. TIME TO ACT…Reduced rainfall in Costa Rica endangers power supply. Currently, Costa Rica produces more than 80% of its electricity from hydroelectric plants, which are emissions-free. In the dry season of 2007, rainfall levels fell, disrupting the flow of electricity from hydroelectric plants in the country. The reduced rainfall has been attributed to global warming. If this trend continues, Costa Rica may consider new energy sources, such as generating power from volcanic heat or wind.

Costa Rica, our heartfelt best wishes in overcoming the problems caused by global warming. We pray that all countries will follow Costa Rica’s example in protecting the planet so that together we may enjoy the Earth’s abundant natural resources and beauty.

18. TIME TO ACT…New Colorado invention removes pollutants from coal-burning plants. US scientist Dr. David Neumann is collaborating with the Colorado Springs Utilities company to test a new treatment that is expected reduce up to 90% of pollutants generated from coal-fired electric plants. The cost of this new technology is only a fraction of what is needed for other processes under development. Dr. Neumann says that his method should be able to reduce carbon emissions along with pollutants.

Bravo, Dr. Neumann and Colorado Springs Utilities! We greatly appreciate your dedication to scientific inventions that benefit the world and wish your new development every success.

19. TIME TO ACT…France's National Center for Scientific Research predicts possible extinction of the king penguin. The researchers found that a 0.25 degrees Celsius rise in temperatures decreased an adult bird’s survival chances by 9%. According to the predictions of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an increase of 0.4 degrees Celsius is expected over the coming two decades due to global warming. Thus, it is believed that the king penguin’s survival is truly in jeopardy.

A big thank you, National Center for Scientific Research, for alerting us to the immediate actions that must be taken to keep our gracious penguins safe. May we work together so that all God’s creations continue to survive and grace this planet.

20. TIME TO ACT…Plant fossils give clues on future of global warming. According to US findings, 55 million years ago the Earth got warmer by 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) causing insects from the tropical regions to spread to other regions where they could now survive. Some scientists already believe a similar phenomenon is happening now, with a dramatic rise in damage to leaves in temperate regions. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is forecasting a rise in temperature up to 4 degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) by the year 2100.
